Why does hunter x hunter have an x? (Explained)

Today I’ll be answering why Hunter x Hunter has an “x” in the title.

Why does hunter x hunter have an x?

It’s simple. The author decided to magnify the word Hunter. The “x” is meant to be a connector to the previous word. With that said, you’ve probably been pronouncing the name of the show as well as the episodes wrong. There’s people that interpret the “x” on their own and say it’s purely ornamental.

The Author Was Asked

So I found out that the X definitively came from the author.

Yoshihiro Togashi (who is also the author of Yu Yu Hakusho) was watching a comedy show on TV.

The show had the name repeated in the title and Togashi decided to do the same for his manga and the anime.

It’s important to know that it’s simply repeated or else it would imply that the story is about hunters hunting other hunters.

It Connects

You remember when I said the “x” is meant to repeat?

That’s true, but when you repeat something, what do you think that does?

It’s a connector of course.

In western language, the “x” is actually a multiplication sign.

This further supports the “x” being a connector.

It joins the two things focused.

We see the “x” being used to join multiple words in music videos, book titles, and fight matchups.

You’ve Probably Pronounced The Name Wrong

If you’re new to the show then there’s a good chance that you’ve been pronouncing the name of the show wrong.

An interesting poll that was conducted on Twitter shows that users would actually include the “x” when talking about Hunter x Hunter.

“It’s just an Ornament.”

There’s been users that sees the “x” as simply an ornament to decorate the title.

Sorry to break it to you, but the “x” is more than a spacer.
