How does Chucky keep coming back? (explained)

This post will explain how does Chucky keep coming back.

After 7 canon friendly films starring the killer doll, it’s pretty clear of the source that makes Chucky appear immortal.

Sure, we’ve seen him come back through electrocution, and even the bad decision to keep rebuilding of the dolls.

But what’s the real reason?

What is the source that separates him from the likes of a Freddy, or even Jason?

Let’s get into it.

How does Chucky keep coming back to life?

Chucky keeps coming back thanks to his voodoo spell that he performs. This spell allows him to transfer his soul from his body into another, in this case into the Good Guy Doll. However, his voodoo powers have gone on to develop to where he can even split his soul into multiple vessels.

Voodoo Magic

“Ade due Damballa, give me the power I beg of you!”

It’s the chant that Chucky is notoriously known for saying in order to perform his dark voodoo magic.

The words to the voodoo chant is found in virtually every film in the Child’s Play franchise.

A shortened version of the phrase is actually found on the back of an amulet that was able to be easily repeated by Chucky’s child.

When that phrase was repeated, it awakened both Chucky and Tiffany.

But with that said, there are different variations of the phrase that’s said.

An extended version was repeated at the end of the Curse of Chucky.

The exceptions

I mentioned earlier, the way Chucky came back was mainly from voodoo magic, but there were occurrences that were different.

We found other revival methods happen from 2 other movies in which he was brought back in a different way.

The two movies are:

  • Child’s Play 2
  • Child’s Play 3

In Child’s Play 2, Chucky was revived through an electricity malfunction that happened to awaken the killer doll.

In Child’s Play 3, there was a mixture of blood that came from Chucky’s doll body get mixed with plastic to make new dolls.

Child’s Play 1

This film follows the Barclays, and Karen Barclay who buys a good guy doll for her son Andy.

She believes Andy about Chucky being a real person and decides to confront him.

That is, until he attacks.

There’s many people who may think the story’s about the son, but it’s really about her for the first film.

You have a mom working to make ends meet, and unknowingly buys a doll filled with the soul of a well known serial killer.

She spends her time, trying to prove the doll to be more than what it is, but we, the viewers, find out that it’s only the beginning.

Child’s Play 2

Continuing from the last film, Karen actually is out of a now 8 year old Andy Barclay’s life, placed in a mental hospital.

At this point, Chucky is still on a mission to take control of Andy’s soul, by any means.

He actually comes back through being cleaned up, and redesigned, ultimately putting him back together.

Here’s the link if you wanna buy the second movie.

Child’s Play 2

Child’s Play 3

By the time we reach the third film in the franchise, Child’s Play 3, we’re introduced to new actors and characters.

One of the more important set of characters is Tyler and de Silva.

Bride of Chucky

This 1998 film introduces a female companion for Chucky, known as Tiffany.

She’s actually known as the woman who revived the killer doll with same voodoo chant mentioned earlier.

The tables turn when Chucky uses more voodoo magic to transfer her soul into a doll as well.

It works because it adds a new dynamic to the franchise, and gives our favorite killer doll a rival in psychosis.

Immediately we’re given the hint of a sequel when we find out that Tiffany gives birth to a baby at the end of the movie.

Seed of Chucky

In Seed, Tiffany and Chucky are actually brought back using the amulet of Damballa, with the phrase that awakens them.

If you follow along, you’ll notice that there’s a human version of Tiffany as well, because she had the same goal as Chucky.

There’s a lot of use of voodoo magic in this film because it’s how see Tiffany finally become human by the end of the movie.

The new character that we’re introduced to, well grown up at least, is Glen.

The two have a plan of helping him become human again too, and get Chucky to insert his semen into the human Jennifer Tilly.

There’s been claims that this film acts as a euphemism for mental health.

They explore it for the likes of Tiffany, Glen and Chucky too.

Chucky Season 1

Chucky finally got a well deserved shot at being broadcasted on 2 national networks for its lifetime debut.

It seemed to have multiple reviews on being perfect for tv, despite its odds of being disliked for a horror show.

I recommend you watch it if you’ve seen the other movies.

It keeps the continuity of what continues to bring Chucky back to life, the relationships of reoccurring characters, and storyline.

On top of that, you’ll notice that there’s new characters as well with still push the story along further.

Chucky Season 2

Chucky Season 2 brings back the same cast from the previous season, as well as a few new ones to battle the same Chucky.

This season takes an ambitious route in really playing around with the concept of having Chucky split personalities.

Keep in mind that Chucky’s ability to transfer souls plays a big role in understanding this season’s story.

They do fans justice in bringing back even more characters from previous movies, who expectedly play a bigger role in the story.

I would still put it behind the first season in terms of the story, but it’s still worth a watch, especially since a 3rd season’s in production.

How does Chucky come to life

Chucky uses ritual voodoo to transfer his soul to a Good Guy doll. He used it while living as Charles Lee Ray and earning the name the Lakeshore Strangler. The chant is courtesy of the Damballa summoning phrase that Charles uses to escape Detective Mike Norris. In Curse of Chucky, he even reveals a relationship that he developed which motivated his desire to continue living as a killer doll.

Chucky escapes death with it

When Chucky as Charles Lee Ray is running from a shootout with police, he uses voodoo as his last resort to essential cheat death.

Curse of Chucky reveals

As you should know that Curse of Chucky has a return after a gap period from when Seed was released.

Strategically thinking, the director decided to continue the story, using the opportunity to dive deeper into Chucky’s past.

Without giving too much away, he stood-off with one of his hostages and reveals a story that explains why he picked they’re family.

The Chucky Song

There’s parody songs and things alike that give tribute to the killer doll.

They’re all really good and you should check them out but there are some legitimate bars used in rap.

The lyrics can be broken down here.

My favorite example is obviously my song above but because this franchise had an impact on my entertainment I pay tribute.

You can find more references if you check through my catalog.

Final Thoughts

These reasons I showed about how Chucky comes back also answers why does Chucky keep coming back to life as well.

Let’s revisit some of the points again.

His dark magic allows him to manipulate souls at will when he performs the chant to go with it.

There’s also the unspoken rule in where you’re never supposed to kill the main villain of your star franchise.

We’ve seen Chucky come back multiple ways but the main 2 movies that changed the method was Child’s Play 2 and 3.

I answer similar questions on Why Does Chucky Kill found on the Movies and TV page too.

You never want to kill the main centerpiece of your franchise.

These movies show you every way Chucky comes back to life:

  • Child’s Play
  • Child’s Play 2
  • Child’s Play 3
  • Bride of Chucky
  • Seed of Chucky

These movies (except the first film) explain exactly, “how does Chucky come back to life?”

A combination of odd coincidences and intended use of voodoo are both the main reasons.

We see that the power is spread amongst others as Chucky continues and has a female companion that learned the process as well.

It’s a variety of ways that it’s done and indicates that there’s someone you can count on to continue Chucky’s legacy.

I appreciate the directions that the director decided to take things because it helps others identify with such a crazy concept.

But what do you think?
