While composing a song, do songwriters write the lyrics first, or the music?
There’s common steps that every songwriter usually goes through when they make music. It really depends on the mood of the person making the song. I actually have a personal preference for how I make music. Regardless, there’s a good case being made for lyrics first but there’s songs that charted well with much thought into lyrics.

One of the first things you should take by in account in making songs is to be inspired first.

When I make music, I tend to have a specific audience that I keep in mind when I make that song.
The case for lyrics first
It’s important to note that you can indeed make music without having the lyrics in mind yet.
You can make it with less lyrical music
There’s been composers that argue the fact that great songs could be made just by honing in on your five senses.
