Why do digital cameras make a shutter sound?

It’s the mirror flipping on top of the camera, and it’s used to allow light on the sensor. Also from the shutter opening. It’s commonly mistaken to be a feature that’s exclusive to DSLRs, but they’re actually known to be on the mirrorless cameras as well.
